Plastering & Rendering

Is this skim coat job acceptable for a full room plastering?

Akvile 23/06/2025 - 8.49 AM

Hello, We recently paid £500 in cash to have all four walls and the ceiling of a small room skimmed. After the job was finished, we noticed several issues: • There are patches where the green base layer (possibly bonding plaster or green plasterboard) is still visible through the skim. • He came back and filled some of the holes using Polyfilla, but left a large unplastered section because he said he thought it was wood — even though it clearly had the same cracked surface as the rest of the wall. • He also left the area above the air vent unfilled, saying he didn’t bring the right tools for it. When we questioned him, he asked why we didn’t tell him about these areas — but we assumed his quote covered the entire room, and we expected him to assess and plaster everything that needed it. Is this considered an acceptable standard for a skim coat job? Should we expect the surface to be fully and evenly covered, with no visible base layer or unfilled areas? We’d really appreciate any advice or opinions from experienced plasterers. Photos can be provided if helpful.

From what you said it does sound rough. Hopefully a good decorator can make good, but if you're not happy I wouldn't bother with the last guy again. John
