Connecting 2.5 twin earth to shower 10mm

Steve 12/06/2025 - 9.57 AM

Hi, I would just like to clarify if I have figured this out correctly. So, we have removed our old electric shower, as we don't want it. This has left the connection available — it's a 10mm cable that goes back to the CU and is protected by a 40-amp breaker. I am thinking of installing a smart toilet and a Bluetooth speaker. So, could I just connect the shower 10mm cable to a connector block, and then connect some 2.5mm twin and earth to the block? I would then run the 2.5mm twin and earth wire up the wall behind the plasterboard, where it will go into the loft. From there, I plan to install a 13-amp fused switch socket, and then from that socket run 2.5mm cable to a plug socket that will power the toilet and the speakers — thus removing the need for me to replace the 10mm wire or mess with the fuse board. Thanks in advance, Steve

Hi Steve In theory your idea is possible but you would need to ensure the connection is in an appropriate junction box and you leave no basic insulation exposed. You would also need to change the MCB in your consumer unit as 2.5 T&E is only rated to 26a so cannot be fed by a 40a MCB
