Satin, Gloss or Eggshell?

Anonymous user 02/06/2025 - 8.33 AM

I am looking to paint my radiator, skirting boards and wardrobe door white. What type of paint would come out nicer?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Eggshell has less sheen to it and in my opinion is less durable than satin. Satin is halfway between eggshell and gloss and is pretty much and industry standard default now

"I’d avoid eggshell. If you want a shiny finish, go for gloss. If you prefer something more subtle, satin is a better choice."

Gloss • Shine: Very shiny, reflective. • Durability: Extremely tough, easy to wipe clean. • Look: Traditional, bright finish — but can show brush marks and imperfections. • Best for: Radiators and high-traffic woodwork if you like a bold, polished look. Eggshell • Shine: Low sheen (velvety, almost matte). • Durability: Wipeable but not as tough as gloss or satin. • Look: Softer, more modern, subtle finish. Hides imperfections better. • Best for: Wardrobe doors or where you want a gentle, understated look. Satin (a.k.a. satinwood) • Shine: Midway between gloss and eggshell. • Durability: Hardwearing and easy to clean. • Look: Smooth, contemporary, not too shiny but not flat. • Best for: A consistent look across radiators, skirtings, and doors. My recommendation for most modern homes: Satinwood in white — it gives a clean, elegant look that works on all three (radiator, skirting, wardrobe door) without being too stark like gloss or too flat like eggshell.
