Gas pipe seems to be sealed with concrete
Anonymous user 27/05/2025 - 8.56 AM
We just moved into a new property, and want to install a dual fuel free range cooker. The area in the kitchen seems to have both the electric connection, and a gas pipe connection, however, the gas pipe that is coming up through the ground seems to be sealed off with concrete/cement to keep it shut. Is it still useable (or unsealable) for installation or does it require a new gas pipe?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, congratulations on your new home!
Thanks for your message regarding the gas connection for your dual fuel range cooker.
From what you’ve described, it’s possible that the gas pipe sealed with concrete may have been decommissioned. In some cases, these pipes can be made usable again, but only after a Gas Safe engineer has inspected the condition and carried out a tightness test to confirm it’s safe and compliant.
If the pipe is in good condition and accessible, it may be suitable for reuse. However, if there’s any damage or uncertainty, installing a new gas supply pipe is usually the safest and most reliable option — and it ensures the installation complies with current gas safety regulations (IGEM/UP/1B).
I’d be happy to take a look and advise further once shortlisted.
Kind regards,
Ethan – Heating & Gas Engineer
