Plastering & Rendering

Skimmed walls in old property

Chris Hanson 06/05/2025 - 8.34 AM

My daughter has moved in to an old property that looked like it had damp issues with mould on walls on gable end. Damp inspection surveyor suggested it was more likely due to walls being skimmed with gypsum trapping the moisture in the walls. As a solution, if I knock all the plaster off and put a stud wall up with an air gap would the mould come through on the studded wall or would this be a suitable solution. Easier to put a stud up then replaster the existing wall and the room is big enough to do this.

Hey Chris well A stud wall with an air gap (might) work, but moisture could still seep through unless properly managed. For a lasting fix: Strip the gypsum plaster. Let the wall dry fully. Ath the end Use breathable lime plaster(best for old properties) or ensure the stud wall has good ventilation.
