Paint stripping off the wall after skim coat and mist coat

Anonymous user 04/03/2024 - 4.47 PM

Hi , Need help please, I think I have messed up something We are renovating a 30 year old property and tried to paint one of the room after stripping off the old paint. I applied skim coat and allowed it to dry for a week and then applied a mist coat (dulux pure brilliant white and water 50%-50%). After allowing to settle for couple of days, I have applied pure brilliant white paint and for some reason the paint is stripping off in couple of the places. Can someone please help me to understand what exactly I am missing here and how can I rectify it? Any suggestion or advice is much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi If I have to paintg on new plaster, i normally water down PVA glue (unibond) this then dries to give a good seal, and no mist coat needed. I hope this helps

sounds like it needed sealing. might be worth looking at Zinsser GARDZ or PEEL STOP to see if this can rectify the problem before going nay further

Hi it down to your mist coat mixture. It Should be 3 parts paint 1 part water and sometimes you will require two coats of the mist before repainting.

Hi it may be that 50/50 mix is far to weak,I personally only ever do a ratio of 70/30 ratio mix

If it’s only peeling in a couple of places, use zinsser gardz on those areas, personally I would have left it longer than a week (after skimming) before painting but if not peeling in all areas definitely recommend zinsser gardz

Zinsser those parts, and apply mist-coat without adding any water on those areas.

Few things ... how much was the plaster polished sometimes if its too shiny like s mirror paint won't hold due to top coat been damp soaks though the mist on the next roll it peels straight off. If you used a filler in places the top coat can soak though to the filler and just peels when you roll . Dulux bw is quite a thick paint personality id used a cheep paint like mcphersons, Leyland or armsted it's a bit more runny mix that 5050 Sand the patches I use zinsser peel stop around the edge of the patches . Then paint
