Plaster cracking 4 days after having doorway blocked up

Anonymous user 11/03/2024 - 3.32 PM

Hi all. I've just had the living room doorway blocked up by a plasterer. He used new timber in the original frame, plaster board on top, then plastered over. The finished job looked great initially, but hair line cracks started to appear all the way around where the door used to be after 4 days. More cracks have appeared on either side of the original cracks and they are getting bigger. This has happened on both sides of the wall, but it's worse on the outside (the hallway wall). I have spoken to the plasterer, and he said it was nothing to worry about and that some bonding placed over the cracks would rectify it ( he would do this). I should add, he plastered right to the front door in the hallway (there's a 2 metre gap between where the door used to be and the front door). When asked why he did this, he said, "It didn't look right." Also, there hasn't been any heating on as I'm having the radiators replaced - I know heat can cause plaster to crack. I cannot fault the plastering, but I am wondering if the prep was done correctly. Should he have taken out the old frame and replaced it with something slightly narrower, making space for the plaster board and plaster? Can anyone help ?!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

There is obviously some movement between the new plasterboard and if it had been bonded on to original frame that can be a couple of reasons if it’s not been unibonded correctly between frame and original plaster.allso I would be questioning whether it has been scrim taped up if it’s gone as quick as that especially both sides

Yes, it’s the wood in the old frame causing the cracks , should never skim over wood , always cracks ,. He should have either removed the frame or trimmed it back so as plasterboard would cover it

100% it needs Scrim tape around the fitted plaster board, this will.stop it cracking. He hasn't done this and that's what the problem is.

By looks of it the new wood has expanded once it had contact with the moisture of the plastering this is the reason that happens most of the time Need to check if it has scrimm tape and if the gaps between the new board and the old wall were to wide should have used bonding and tape Nothing to be concerned as it can be fixed sometimes even by decorating filler All the best
