Old person smell in house despite renovation

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 3.31 PM

We're trying to get to the bottom of what's causing our house to smell. The house is a 1950s 3-bed semi. Only had one prior owner. When we bought the house it had been unoccupied for a couple of years and had a smell of stale air and old people (kind of the like the smell that hits you when you walk into a charity shop full of clothes). We had the whole house redecorated, replastered etc. Stripped old wallpaper in the living. Sanded and re-oiled the parquet flooring and laid new carpet upstairs. However the smell, although not pungent and in your face, still persists. When the carpet was laid there was still dust on and in the floorboards from the work that was done. Could this be causing it? We have solid floors downstairs though yet the smell is down there too, so maybe the floorboard dust upstairs isn't the issue? When the house was redecorated Leyland paint was used and it seems pretty thin and cheap so maybe it's letting the old wall smell through? The tricky thing is I don't know who best to speak to about resolving this issue as we don't know the source of the smell. Any suggestions or help much appreciated!

Dear homeowner, After reading your explanation,I would suggest it may be a ventilation issue. If there are no signs of damp and your home has been fully renovated, it is hard to think it’s anything else. It is important that the chimney breasts are vented to allow for a free flow of air. Another area to consider, do your windows/ frames have trickle vents? These are a must have! The third option to consider would be taking a closer look t the floorboards in the bathroom/ Wc. These can hold all sorts of smells, you know the ones!
