Vaillant ecotec boiler cutting out during shower after new mixer tap installed

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 3.30 PM

I have recently had a new shower head installed in my shower. Since this has happened, the boiler (which in a Vaillant ecotec that has been serviced twice since the issue started) has started cutting out. What will happen is: 1. Shower turned on - normal water temperature/ pressure 2. Run for a few minutes - hot water will cut out, water pressure will increase but only cold water 3. Run another minute - all water pressure cuts out to a trickle. Tap needs to be turned off and on A few more details: * The taps are thermostatic (as the plumber thought they might work better than the original taps I bought). * The water is coming from a gravity fed tank on the roof. Edit - I am in a block of flats, so can't change the tank or move to use mains pressure. The tank is large enough to supply water to the bathrooms of 6 small flats and previously the pressure from the tank was enough to maintain the water temperature - this has only happened since changing the taps * If the shower head is lowered to the bath the issue doesn't occur. * This problem didn't happen until the taps were changed My plumber hasn't been able to offer any reasons for why this could be happening and has suggested I get a pump installed. I'm not sure if this will solve the problem and don't want to spend all of that money if it doesn't fix the problem. Edit (as i can't respond to answers) - the building isn't a council building, but is Victorian. The tank is maintained annually and is very clean. I was told the taps would work with the low pressure, but I didn't buy them so can't check. I had originally installed taps that would work with 0.5 bar, but these weren't thermostatic so the plumber advised changing them to a thermostatic tap.

I can understand this is a council building cold feeds to the bathrooms cold water requirements from the loft. Now some water tanks are very dirty if they not been maintained by regulation so dirt in tank could damage new cartridge in new mixer tap. if this is not the case make sure mixer tap installed correctly according it’s installation guide, and also check instructions of the tap what pressure you would need for that tap as they would only work properly with curtain pressures.

Your header tank needs to be higher up in loft and bigger

Sound like the gravity fed tank is too small to feed the shower; so the pressure before the pump on the boiler is too low for the pump to activate when the tap is on this is allowing air to suck back into the shower head when it up high stopping the pump after a few minutes of use. Easiest way to solve this is either switch to mains pressure to the boiler and bypassing the tank. or getting a bigger tank and increasing the height of the tank in the loft. The more fall the tank has the larger the pressure. Because the shower head is high up, its almost at the same level as the outlet on the tank so this is equalling to marginal pressure coming out and this is the reason why the boiler is struggling to keep up or shutting off. I don't recommend shower pumps getting installed unless you're mains pressures poor because they seem to cause more issues than solve Hope this helps.
