Bathroom Fitting

Electric wiring in the bathroom is it unsafe ?

Anonymous user 17/03/2024 - 2.31 PM

Hi I have moved into a council property with my daughter and they have done a very poor job with fixing it up and in the bathroom they have made it a wetroom but there is wire cables on the walls covered by plastic casing that run around the bathroom and to the electric shower. I wanted to know it this is safe as the bathroom doesn’t have a window and no fan for ventilation just a vent that is very small.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi If the job was done by council contractors I believe that all should be safe to use. However, I recommend to get in touch with council and explain to them about poor ventilation which might cause damp problems in the future

That's not safe at all. No cables are ment to show. Also I would advise to also fit a fan for ventilation and if possible a new window

The electric cable running in plastic chanel is safe if it's connected properly to electric shower

Yes it is safe, not a professional job at all I would have buried the cables in the wall but it does meet regulation standard with the plastic trunking.

Very difficult to say if it is safe or not just from your description so the best I can do is give you some things to check. 1. If this is rented ask for the EICR 2. Check you have RCD protection for the Shower and any other circuits in that room. 3. That there is adequate bonding in place 4. Not an issue for you per se but the cables should be protected from premature collapse. (I am assuming this was done to the latest regulations) The cables running in plastic casing whilst looking ugly will unlikely present any danger if they are twin and earth and are continuous (no joins). I assume the cables are all at high level. Because these are surface mounted my concern would be where they enter enclosures this is where potential problems can exist.

Hi ,if you move to council property they must provide electric certificate. Usually they check property after tenants and before they hand ower to new tenants. Enjoy your new property.
