32 year old Boiler still working (sort of) - repair or replace?

Anonymous user 08/03/2024 - 2.30 PM

I have an old Worcester 240 combi boiler that's been working ok and recently has started developing an issue where it struggles to detect the flow from from the kitchen tap (been fine for the past 7 years) and it doesn't fire up. The bathroom and cloakroom are ok and it kicks in when running these after waiting around 30 seconds. It's still working for central heating as normal but when running only the hot water demand it seems to leak a few drops too. I'm thinking is it better to replace at a rough cost of 2500 to 3k with a new efficient system or is it worth seeing if it can be repaired so it'll keep chugging away for a couple more years? Although I know it'll need to go sooner rather than later...I'm hoping to put off replacement for a bit longer yet.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Dnt make them like that any more you’ve had your moneys worth and sum you would struggle to find parts and you will save a fortune on gas with a modern boiler find a local plumber

Taking into account the age of the boiler, it is very likely that it has undergone some type of repair at some point or another, my opinion is that exchanging it for a new one would be the best option.

I feel a boiler of that age should be replaced, not an only from an efficiency perspective but a safety one too. It’s served you well but investing a new one would be a prudent decision

The question is are parts available at a reasonable price?... Fit a new boiler and you deff need a service/check yearly to keep ya warenty.Do not get a cheap install as it will bite you back with these erp pumps and cheaply made parts compared to old stuff. All it probably needs is a flow switch which is on its way out.if it's fixable keep it running if your OK with your gas bills.
