Can we knock through external wall to build small nook and give more space for log burner…

Anonymous user 07/03/2024 - 2.30 PM

We have a fairly long living room but not a lot of space across it the other direction once furniture is in place, we really want a log burning stove as that end of the house is really hard to heat effectively. A log burner to replace the current useless electric fire would protrude too far into the room to be practical but our garden wraps around the house on that wall so we are wondering is it possible to knock through that wall and essentially take part of the garden to build into to make a small nook for the stove within and then use a metal external pipe up from the brick built nook up the side of our house meaning minimal brickwork. Is this practical ?

Hi there, your project idea to build a nook for a log burner by knocking through an external wall is definitely feasible, but there are several important considerations and steps you need to take: 1. **Planning Permission**: Depending on the extent of the work and local regulations, you may need planning permission to alter the structure of your house. 2. **Building Regulations**: You'll definitely need to comply with building regulations, especially concerning the installation of a log burner and the alteration of the external wall. 3. **Structural Engineer**: Consult with a structural engineer to ensure that knocking through the wall won't affect the integrity of your house. 4. **Qualified Builder**: Engage a qualified builder who has experience with this type of work. They can handle the construction and ensure it is done safely and to code. 5. **HETAS Registered Installer**: For the installation of the log burner, you should use a HETAS registered installer to ensure it meets safety standards. 6. **Chimney and Flue**: You'll need expert advice on the chimney and flue system, which must be suitable for the type of log burner you're installing. 7. **Insulation**: Proper insulation of the nook is crucial for efficiency and safety. 8. **Ventilation**: Adequate ventilation is required for the log burner to operate safely. 9. **Garden Aesthetics**: Consider how this extension will affect the look and layout of your garden. 10. **Neighbours**: Inform your neighbours of your plans, especially since the work may affect the external appearance of your house. Overall, while the concept is practical, the execution requires careful planning and professional input at every stage. It's a great way to add value to your property and improve the heating of your home, but make sure to follow all legal and safety requirements.

Yes. But cost would be so great. You can get a slim but wide stove. Instead. Need to get an hetas person to price. But think you be looking at 4 k. To do.
