Taking a 3 core and earth from a 3 plate system to the switch

Anonymous user 05/03/2024 - 2.30 PM

I have 2 downlights that is using the 3 plate method as it has a switched live coming into the switch. I want a neutral at the switch to connect a smart switch so looking to replace the 2 core and earth from the last spot light with a 3 core and earth. The first spot light would still use the 2 core and earth wire. The spot light only has a live and neutral and is a class 2. I am thinking of wiring it as below using a 3 core wire. 1. Brown permernet from the smart switch to the live terminal on the spot light 2. Earth will be terminated in wago connector at the spot light 3. Neutral (grey) from smart switch connected to the neutral at the spot light. 4. The black wire (switched live) would also run from the switch to the live terminal at the spot light, so essentially permanent live and SL will be in the same terminal at the spot light. Is this the best way to do it?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Inside the 3 core you'll need to use the: Brown as your permanent live in Common Black as your switch live in L1 Grey as your neutral in N Earth needs to be sheathed and put in either the metal lug in the back of the box or in connection block for a plasterboard box.

Hello, I'm not sure what you mean by 3 plate method... but I'm assuming there's a twin and earth cable from the first spotlight to the switch (Common/ L1) or (Permanent Live/Switched Live) (Same thing!) The best thing to do is to replace this cable for a 3 core and Earth. Which would then be; (Common/L1/Neutral) or (Permanent Live/Switched Live/Neutral). At the spotlight, connect this 3 core and Earth accordingly. BROWN - To All Permanent Live (Wago Connect) BLACK - To All Switched Live (To Spotlight) GREY - To All Neutral (To Spotlight) Earth - To All Earths (Wago Connect) Then take it to the switch! Then at the smart switch, wire accordingly! Brown - Common/Perm Live Black - L1 / Switched Live Grey - Neutral Hope this helps
