probably need re roof - fit velux windows at same time for future conversion?

Anonymous user 04/03/2024 - 2.30 PM

Hi I live in a 2 bed mid terraced house built in 1870. Roof is not in good condition and 3 roofers have been round and all said it needs a new roof. To add value to the house, I'm considering a loft conversion - can I get velux windows fitted as part of the new roof and then get the rest of the conversion done at a later date? Or is it best to get the roof replaced as part of the loft conversion?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, good afternoon Ryan here from Andrews and Sons roofing in my opinion, it is always better to get the windows fitted and the roof done when you’re doing the construction so then it’s all done and out the way but if it is a problem with a means to pay you could get the extension make it weather tight and then do the roof and the VL windows in the future. Yes but just make sure the extension is watertight so there’s no further damage to the extension. Many thanks Andrews and sons roofing

you can get the loft conversation done at a latter date but in reality it is better to get it all done at the same time that way your only paying for things once rather than paying to redo things

Hi stefan Answer to you question is yes you can get velux s installed when you get a new roof as the roof will be stripped off back to bare rafters and you will be able to double up your rafters and trimmers around them required for building control . Although I would not say this is wise if your definitely looking to convert the loft as if you are going to do a proper conversion with a dormer on the rear you will need to install steels in the ridge line and possibly in the floor which will mean you will need to cut about quite a bit your new roof . So verdict is cost wise and practical reasons would be much more sensible to do all this works together . Hope this helps
