Banging sound in roof near old chinmey

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.47 PM

Hi, I have a banging sound that’s driving me insane in my roof. I live on the top floor of a tenement. It’s in the bedroom and the noise appears to be where there is an old chimney- and only when it’s windy. Our usual roofer has been up there but can’t find anything- he’s tied up the Ariel cables, which we initially thought was the problem. Nothing noticeable in the attic- I’ve also been up there and can’t actually hear it so much in that space. It’s driving me absolutely mad- as can’t sleep when it’s banging. I can only think it must be something inside the chimney- but have no idea what. Any advice would be very welcome!!

Hi, if you have had the roof surveyed maybe consider surveying the void where the chimney used to be. there are a lot of affordable endoscope options on Amazon and with some basic DIY knowledge, you could have a look at what's going on in the cavity by drilling some 10mm holes and filling them after. Problems like this are always nightmares and I wish I had advice that could directly solve it but further investigation is all I can't suggest! Good luck, APG Team

Hi It could be an old liner from a gas fire or log burner that's been cut off and left hanging from the top of the chimney .

Get a local chimney sweep out, most of us have drones now and all should have cameras, to look inside and up the flue.
