Insulation

Insulating porch area

Anonymous user 25/02/2024 - 2.30 PM

Hi all, I have a tiny entrance area/porch my my semi detached property. This has a flat roof that goes across to the garage that's attached, that's now been changed into a room. Since changing the garage to a room and removing the small radiator from the entrance way, of course that now gets really cold. I'm wanting to know before we have a new front door fitted. Would it be an expensive job to try and insulate the room a little and would it actually make a difference? Can you easily insulate a flat roof? Sorry if I'm not explaining it very well is difficult without adding pictures to this post.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hello, When dealing with such issues, a more cost-effective and effective solution would be to insulate the space beneath the roof at a lower cost and install a suspended ceiling indoors. Taking a comprehensive approach to thermal insulation is crucial. In England, there is generally a focus on thermal insulation for house roofs, but less attention is given to heat and sound insulation for walls. However, performing insulation solely on the roof can still bring significant benefits. As a recommendation to your question: 1-Insulate the walls from the inside with 4 cm thickness of 150 kg/m3 rock wool insulation. 2-For the roof, implement the same material for insulation within the indoor space (ceiling). 3-If the height allows, first perform insulation beneath the roof in the ceiling, and then install a suspended ceiling to solve the problem. Kind regards,

Yes, insulating a single-skin garage by framing it with timber and adding insulation before boarding it can make a significant difference in temperature. This approach helps create a thermal barrier, preventing heat loss and making the space more energy-efficient. Timber framing provides structural support for insulation material, and the added layer of insulation contributes to better temperature control, especially in colder seasons. It's a practical solution to enhance both comfort and energy efficiency within the converted garage.

The garage conversion should have been insulated if done properly and signed off by building control Yes it can be done internally, just a lot of work (don't mean to "scare" you off) Some of the above solutions can work I would add PIR insulation boards with frames, board and skim. The ceiling can be cold roof build (if space allows, from inside) or warm roof (from the top on the outside) I would go for at least 50mm thickness of insulation, if not 100mm Good luck
