Connecting 4 core flex to bathroom fan’s 3 core flex.

Hi, Our bathroom extractor fan is switched on by a light switch outside the bathroom, fed from a fused, 4 core socket spur. The fan switch is part of a double switch and the other switch switches on the bathroom light. So, the fan is operated independently of the light. The fan switch is connected to an old timer unit attached high on the wall outside of the bathroom. The fan has stopped working and I have disconnected it and tested it with a separate powered flex, to no avail. I have done a cursory check on the timer unit and there appears to be no voltage passing from the unit to the 3 core flex which goes through the wall to the fan. I can’t see any point to the timer unit as the fan has its own timer, factory set to 15 minutes. So, I would like to remove the timer unit and connect the 4 core flex to the 3 core flex. My question is, what is the safest way to wire the 4 core flex to the 3 core flex, without having a permanent live to the fan? Does the live from the 4 core go to the live connector in the fan terminal (existing setup) or Does the live from the 4 core go to the switched live connector in the fan terminal or Does the switched live from the 4 core go to the switched live connector in the fan terminal or Does the switched live from the 4 core go to the live connector in the fan terminal or Doesn’t it matter? Whichever way is best, either the live or switched live in the 4 core will be redundant and, I presume, should be blocked off? Thanks, Dan
