Builder is trying to amend the initial quoted invoice and asks for vat on labour cost
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.54 PM
Hi, We are undergoing our house renovation with extension. It's been a year but still works have not been completed. Agreed quotation completion period is 6 months but there were couple of changes which quoted as 1month. In the quote, VAT on labour is 0%. Now after an year on questioning completion of works, he amended the quotation with 10K VAT on labour which is out of our budget and asking us to pay to proceed further. We have already paid all the quotation money with incomplete works. Please advise on how to proceed further legally.

Good morning in your case it looks like a non trusted company they should keep the agreed time limit .the company should not take more than 35 procent of the agreed price until is not finished. Regarding VAT .they should not ask any VAT if that wasn't mentioned in agreement

You can check if the company is VAT registered on the internet (HMRC).
You can also check when the company registered etc. SO if they decided to charge all of a sudden it means they probably just started, made a mistake at the beginning or are trying to get more money off of you. Either way you should stick to the T&Cs of the original contract/quote.

I agree with previous answer but regarding VAT on labour alone shouldn’t be allowed

Every job is different, in this case, we don’t know the ins and outs from the other party. As per some other comments above, this should’ve been agreed at the beginning and whatever was agreed should be honoured from both parts involved. in regards to delays sometimes you have to consider extras and changes to the job. Also, this needs to be agreed the time adding to the job and costs. Still think that on a job like this should not exceed one to 3 weeks delay maximum.
