double sole plate distance from slab edge

Anonymous user 20/02/2024 - 2.30 PM

Hello, I will erect a summer house over a 4 inches concrete slab. the dimensions are roughly 7 x 3 meters. the concrete was reinforced with A142 mesh that will go to nearly 1.5 inches from the edges of the concrete slab. My question is, when putting the double sole plate where the frames will be.. Shall I put it flash to the edge of the concrete or better to put the 4x2 sole plate about 2 inches away from the edge of the slab so all the weight of the frames and the roof is resting over the steel mesh? My initial thought was to put it flash with the edge of the slab but I was told to put it over the mesh to avoid the edges to snap. summer house will be 2.9 meters hight using 4x2 frames 450 centres and 2x8 ceiling joists at 450 also. kind regards

Hi victor I personally would step it in from the edge to avoid any cracking of corners when fixing the sole plate to the concrete. I hope this helps

If the mesh is 1.5” in from the edge that is were I would sit the out side edge of the 2 x 4 sole plate

Depends how your cladding the building, if you came right to the edge the first cladding board would go down past the concrete slab to weatherproof the building, otherwise the sole plates will rot

If the concrete slab is supported well on a well compacted hardcore sub base and therefore sole plates are only subjecting the concrete to compressional forces then there is no reason that you cannot put the sole plates flush with the edge.
