Knocking in the floorboards from pipes in the night. Am I going crazy?!

Anonymous user 19/02/2024 - 2.30 PM

Hi, Over the past few evenings since the weather has turned cold in the UK, I've noticed that in the evenings there's this knocking sound coming from the floorboards in the upstairs hallway during and shortly after heating is on. After a quick YouTube trip, it sounds to me exactly like thermal expansion from the pipes. However, when the heating is on during the day, it's extremely infrequent or completely absent. But evening comes and it knocks every 15-30 seconds. My question is, does temperature from outside or possibly from elsewhere in the house, effect the noisy pipes? Because in the day it's currently between 3-6 degrees whereas at night when it's noiseist it's under 1 degree every night atm? The kitchen can be very cold these evenings because of the draft coming in from back door cat flap. And the pipes that are under the hallway floorboards do lead to the kitchen. Could this be contributing?

There’s a few reasons why you might have noises coming from under the floor when you put your heating on. If the pipe work has been installed properly it would be nailed clipped and then a piece of Hairfelt placed inbetween the notched area which stops your pipes from moving and rubbing against the joists or any other materials. When copper gets hot it will expand. If the pipe work has been installed correctly this will not happen. Also the other reason can be air trapped in the pipe work.
