Asbestos boards under soffits removed but now we're freezing

Anonymous user 17/03/2024 - 2.31 PM

Hi. Last year during the build of a new extension we had to call in licensed people to remove the asbestos soffits that were sitting under the UPVC ones so that the builders could join the extension roof to the existing roof. When the asbestos boards were removed, the builders simply replaced the UPVC soffits but didn't replace the asbestos boards with ply panels underneath. Now that temperatures have dropped the upstairs of our house is freezing. Our bedrooms are 'rooms in roof', the cold air coming through the UPVC soffits is just filling the crawl spaces either side making the upstairs colder than downstairs and hard to heat. Any suggestions on how we can resolve this? Should we fit ply panels under the UPVC soffits or do something else?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Reading your information you have a crawl space which is cold, hence making your loft bedroom area cold. Install some loose lay insulation in this area. You'll find this is the easiest. least expensive way of retaining your heat.

The reason behind the cold air seeping through the UPVC soffits and making your upstairs colder appears to be the missing insulation from the asbestos boards. You might think about the following solutions to fix this problem: 1. **Install Ply Panels:** Fitting ply panels underneath the UPVC soffits can provide insulation and reduce cold air infiltration. This is a reasonably simple solution that can help your roof perform better thermally. 2. **Insulate**: To reduce heat loss, think about insulating the crawl spaces with material. As an efficient way to keep cold air out of your upstairs, consider installing insulation boards or spray foam insulation. 3. **Seal Any Gaps:** To stop drafts, look for any openings or gaps around the walls, roof, or soffits. Then, seal them with the proper sealant or insulation. 4**Seek Advice from an Expert:** It is best to speak with a qualified insulation specialist or contractor who can evaluate your particular situation and offer the best solution for your needs. Your upstairs should become more comfortable and easier to heat in the winter months if you take care of the sealing and insulation problems.
