Drilling into thin plaster above bay window for curtain poles
Anonymous user 14/03/2024 - 2.37 PM
Hi, I have bought a curtain pole to install above a 1930s bay window. The window is uvpc and lintel was taken out when that was installed. I am concerned whether I can drill into the thin plasterwork above the window and whether this area will support the pole. There is no brick annd it sounds hollow. Any thoughts? Thanks

It will depend on the composition of the wall. If there is a cavity then the appropriate fixings would need to be used however curtain pole would be better going in to solid wall.

For drilling into thin plaster above a bay window for a curtain pole, here's what you should do:
1. **Use a Stud Finder**: Find the wooden supports behind the plaster. This gives you a solid fixing point.
2. **Choose the Right Fixings**: If there's no stud, use hollow wall anchors like spring toggles. They're great for holding weight in hollow areas.
3. **Be Gentle**: Drill carefully to avoid cracking the plaster. Start with a smaller drill bit and work your way up.
4. **Weight Matters**: If your curtains are heavy, make sure the fixings can handle the weight.

Hello Ciaran48531,
If the area above the bay window sounds hollow and lacks a lintel, it's crucial to assess the structural support before drilling. Thin plasterwork may not provide sufficient support for a curtain pole. Consider consulting with a professional, such as a structural engineer or a qualified installer, to evaluate the situation and recommend suitable installation methods. They can guide you on the best approach to ensure both the safety and effectiveness of the curtain pole installation.

Hello, good afternoon, answering your question and with such an old property it is TRADE that when they put the PVC window they put plasterboard and it can be solved with a special anchor for boards if the curtains are not too heavy, but surely that house has lintels inside of wood, that is, a wooden beam behind the plaster, 5.6 or 7 centimeters behind the plaster and the board. You can use an impact drill if you have one and you can check it. I hope I have helped, greetings David
