LVT - expansion gap or not?

Anonymous user 11/03/2024 - 2.30 PM

Websites suggest that Karndean Looselay, glue down vinyl tiles and the No-Vinyl tiles can all be fitted without an expansion gap (if the room is not too big), but installation instructions for the click version of LVT flooring say there should be one. Carpetright, however, have insisted that an expansion gap is not needed when fitting LVT. What is your opinion on this?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You can get away with no expansion gap but to cover yourself follow manufacturers suggestion to make sure your covered for the fitting of your product

After 45 years fitting all types of flooring I live by the golden rule, READ MANUFACTURES INSTRUCTIONS.. just to cover yourself just in case there’s a problem later on, don’t listen to anyone saying the people who make the stuff don’t know what’s best for their product.

If it’s dry back (glue down) it should be nice and tight to the skirting boards. But LVT click should be fit like laminate flooring with an expansion gap on the perimeter.

Hi, I'm a little bit concered by some people saying an expansion gap isn't needed. For all click flooring such as laminate or click LVT an expansion gap is required and that is exactly what the manufacturers will tell you. I have seen some installers put silicone around the edge even for click LVT to cover the gap but that is a big no. It is a simple rule that as it is a floating floor it will move, the dryback (gluedown) version doesn't need expansion gaps and should be cut perfectly up to your skirting etc without any sealant required. The same goes for looselay as a tackifier adhesive should be used on larger areas to stop any movement. Click LVT doesn't need as big of a gap as laminate but it is required. Dryback LVT is much better than the others in my opinion but does typically cost more but overall comes down to budget and preference. I would just be careful shopping at Carpetright, all the flooring they sell is available elsewhere despite what they claim just like their 'Kossett Carpets' is really Abingdon Flooring and can be found elsewhere for half the price. It's the same story for most of the flooring retail franchises.
