Meter mains switch fuse and isolation switch?
Anonymous user 07/03/2024 - 2.30 PM
On my electric meter I currently don't have a double pole mains isolation switch, this is being fitted by Octopus next week. My CU unit is around 3.7m away from the meter and looking online the maximum length of the tails between the meter and CU should be 3m. If more than 3m, I believe I need a mains switched fuse. Is this correct? So for my setup, do I need both the double pole isolation switch and then a Mains switch fuse too? Or is the double pole isolator switch sufficient?

Hi there, the 2 pole isolator is sufficient alone to comply to bs7671 for meter tails over 3mtr

Hello each DNO has their own requirements however the isolation switch being installed by Octopus is for their benefit. If the installation is already live & connected to the meter? Octopus would normally just fit the isolator in place as they require. The extra distance will not matter from the point of safety assuming the meter tails are correctly sized for the DNO fuse size and the meter tails are installed in a safe manner. Also within a meter cabinet or a meter board only equipment belonging to the DNO can normally be installed

If you wanted to make this simple, get a switched fuse fitted instead of a double pole switch. Personally I don't happen to agree with this so called 3m rule but its up to you. Yes, you will see this written everywhere, but is 0.7m longer tails gonna matter?

If the tails are over 3m you should have a switch fuse added , there would be no need to add a double pole isolator
