Builder asking for more money after paying final balance

Anonymous user 06/03/2024 - 2.32 PM

Hi I have had building work on my house, which took the best part of 2023 to complete. our builder quoted a price and set out a time scale of when payments were expected. (Initial payment, 2nd payment, 3rd payment, final payment upon completion) I’ve paid each invoice upon request. Over Christmas I paid the final payment, which included extras as agreed. today I’ve received an email saying there was an error with the invoice saying he calculated the final balance with an “estimated price” of one of the extras instead of the “actual price” of one of the extras. He is now asking for more money because of this. It’s Over £1000.00 Is that right ? Can he do that after the final bill? sorry if this is the wrong forum. Didn’t know where else to post it!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

It seems like a mistake he made if he sent you an invoice and you both agreed on that final payment then you don’t need to pay anymore than already agreed

A final bill is a final bill! Do not pay anymore! If it’s the builders mistake then it should have been reviewed before sending the final invoice 👍

Reading your side of things I’d say you have stuck to your end and have the right to say no. That being said if your happy with the work and have a relationship with the builder contacting them and asking for there reasoning might be the best thing to do. If you see reason with the error then it’s more of a morality issue.

Personally I would suggest if it’s a genuine mistake by the builder it’s worth explaining and making sure they understand where and how the mistake happened. I’d be to embarrassed to ask, especially when it comes to money.

You both set on a price and had an agreement and you held your end up with paying the payments when said so if his messed up his end with calculating price then that’s his fault so don’t pay

Ask for clarification. If it is reasonable and in line with the contract then it is fair. If you don't recognise it or it isn't within what you've agreed contractually then challenge it.
