Top coat paint coming off under frog tape

Anonymous user 06/03/2024 - 2.31 PM

Hi I mist coated plaster that had dried for a year. Used Leylands matt contractor. Did two mist coats to be on the safe side. First 50/50 water, as it seemed thick and it was warm. second thicker, like 70 paint 30 water. Dried for days inbetween. Then i used the same paint undiluted on top after drying. Let it dry for days, weather was warm. Was really careful regarding dust and hoovered and wiped off several times. Then painted with Farrow and Ball Dead flat. Went on nicely. 6 months later I applied frog tape for 5 minutes and top coat peeled right off. Only top coat, mist coat still stuck firmly on the wall. Was the problem the mist coat or that i didnt use Farrow and Ball primer underneath?. Will I have to strip the whole room of the paint if i like to redecorate at some point. No peeling otherwise..

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

It could be a number of things causing the top coat to not adhere properly to the layer beneath. Based on the information available I would guess if the 2 coats underneath are intact it may be an issue between applying a different finish of paint over a matt emulsion product. I have seen this before with satin paints applied over matt emulsion mist coats My recommendation next time you redecorate is to use a fine grade sanding pad to remove any of the paint that is loose. Apply a stabilising material such as Zinsser Gardz. Apply a very fine filler over the top of that, such as Toupret Fine Filler to ensure a smooth finish. Sand down and thoroughly clean the wall once the filler has dried. Then decorate as normal. It sounds like a lot of work but it is definitely worth doing to ensure a nice finish for future paint and the integrity of future work. Many Thanks, Josh @ North Leeds Painting
