Is a internet dependent combi gas boiler lawful
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.47 PM
Hi all, I was wondering if you can advise. A combi gas boiler has been installed in my residence. Once installed, I learnt that the heating and hot water is entirely dependent on the internet. As Wi-Fi connections are not infallible, what are your thoughts about the product? In a nutshell, because of no internet, I have been unable to turn the heating on. I believe that the product is unlawful if it falls at the mercy of the internet. Cheers.

Hello there,
I would say that your system installed comes with an override button so when the internet fails you still can push that button and make it work manually.
I haven’t heard of any boiler or room thermostat that is entirely dependent on internet in the way you describe, but if there is one on the market, it is not mentioned in the gas regulations or Building Regulations as far as I know, so I would not know how to classify this if legal or not. I hope this help.

If you employed the plumber to install in a property you own its lawful and will almost definitely have the means of manual control. If it has been installed by your land lord I would suggest getting intouch with citizens advice it's probably not legal under renting laws

A gas combination boiler hot water supply relies solely on the opening of a hot water tap and therefore, will be unaffected by any external control. All heating controls will provide a manual override and this should have been explained to you on the hand over.

There still should be a room thermostat linked to the receiver connected to the boiler so if the internet is down you can still control the boiler, if you are in rented accommodation and the landlord has the app on there phone to control the heating and hot water that is illegal
