Installing plywood above aluminium doors??

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 3.03 PM

Hi I'm having 4m origin sliding doors fitted in a new extension, with the 4m gap supported by a catnic beam. The window/door installer has stipulated that we need to fit 18mm plywood to the underside of the beam to help with thermal bridging between the catnic and doors, which are aluminium. I've never heard of this before, and can't find anything about it online. Neither has my builder. Has anyone seen or heard of this before? Normally I wouldn't mind that much, but the additional 18mm, combined with what are quite large tolerances mean that we are now losing 40mm from the top of the apertaure to the glass, whihc is not ideal.

Hi. Sounds like a miss measure to me and no way on this planet should there be ply going in on the head. You shouldn’t really drill through the catnic as this could create a water leakage problem. Even though there should be a cavity tray on the catnic normally formed by a DPM membrane. The head could be fixed from the top of the frame up to the concrete block .2 straps in would be enough and then foam can be applied to the gap or celotex insulation . The straps will secure the head and not seen once boarded over. Hope this helps you
