that is about average cost for this cylinder,if you do not trust the tradesman find someone else,who may supply cylinder before payment then he has to trust you will pay him.

If he wants the payment for cylinder upfront, say as soon as the cylinder is in your home and receipt is produced then you will buy the cylinder then and there from him. Fitting could be a problem if theirs no trust between you and tradesmen. Personally I get customers to sign an agreement to say all materials are my property even when fully fitted until the customer pays in full. If the the customer refuses to pay, I have the right in law to remove all my property which I have installed and the police can't stop me from doing so as I word the agreement as if the customer is with holding my property.

I dont think is fair to clint to pay upftont I personly never ask money upfront same time never leave money behind and as soon as job finish i need to get payed befor i leave the house .unless i know them well enough

I think a deposit covering 50% or material costs is what most sole traders would do if I had a customer who would not agree to those terms a red flag would pop up straight away and I’d walk
