Painting mdf wardrobe
Anonymous user 17/03/2024 - 2.31 PM
Hey i made a mistake and painted a bespoke MDF wardrobe without priming it. The MDF was fully smooth at first but after i painted it, it just got a rough texture to it, even after multiple coats it still has a rough texture and no where near the smoothness it had when it was raw MDF. Is this fixable? Thank you

Sand down everything using 180 sand paper it should be smooth. Again it depends on what paint you used as oil paint is more difficult to sand.

Hi there, the purpose of primer is to sink in to the substrate and provide a lasting base for any subsequent coatings. I assume you have put the first coat on without diluting or thinning. This will cause a neat paint to start going off almost immediately upon applying resulting in heavy roller texture. All subsequent coats will carry the texture of the first unless rubbed down in between with finishing paper, ideally 180 grade. To remedy your problem I would purchase a cheap 125mm orbital sander with 180 grade pads. This will make quick work of eliminating your roller texture. Hand sand any unreachable corners with manual 180 grade sandpaper. Job done! Ensure the substrate is completely dust free and Re coat using a 4” microfibre, medium pile synthetic roller and a 1” synthetic filament brush, coating one surface at a time so your brush marks from cutting in the edges are still wet so can be eliminated by the roller creating that spray factory finish 👍👍
