Carpentry & Joinery

Trade for creating a doorway in internal block wall.

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.52 PM

Hi, To give context to my question, the staircase runs up the middle of our house with one side being the kitchen / diner and the other the living room. Underneath the upstairs landing is a 1.8m x 1m extra bit of space in the living room which we don't use or need. We will be renovating our kitchen soon and had the idea of turning the space under the landing into a pantry, requiring an opening to be created from kitchen side and then blocking off on the living room side. I thought we would go straight to a carpenter / joiner for this however the wall to create the door is made of breeze block so not a stud wall. It can't be load bearing for the whole house as there's landing above it, but would this still need a lintel? Is there one trades person we could go to that could both create the doorway through block as well create a stud wall / potentially shelves in the new pantry? There are also electrics in the way and we would want new electrics put in to make things more complicated. Any help on what kind of trades person who could do this would be great. Thanks!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, the chances are the wall will be taking the weight of the upper level so should the opening span through many joists could create a sagging problem on your landing space without inspection it’s hard to know what material is best to use but considering it’s block work I would recommend a similar material.

Hello, Yes block work would still need a lintel. Theres a few reasons. Although its not supporting another wall, it may well be supporting the landing joists above. A lintel will also just maintain the structural integrity of the wall itself, regardless of it supporting anything, but it most likely is supporting something and is probably safer to assume it is.

String off stares should be self supporting so no a lintel would not be needed So blockwork can be removed to create opening for door liner and door Other side can be blocked off with stud work and plasterboard As far as electrical work not really in kitchen but I would get electrician to take on that part of the job Without looking at job wouldn’t know if any other problems or trades would need to be sorted or involved

A decent chippy will be able to handle that job with a sparks for the wiring. it will need a lintle fitting which will support everything above, but its not a complecated job for an experienced trades man.
