Is knocking from pipes in a new build acceptable?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.36 PM

We're in a new build home and had an inspection from the manufacturer of the heating system components (nothing to do with this question). He commented on a knocking noise (in that instance more like creaking because the knocks were close together). He said this shouldn't happen. It's caused by pipes touching wood. We've just been putting up with all kinds of knocks and bangs and creaks (some very loud) thinking it's an inevitable consequence of expansion and contraction. I'd appreciate a professional opinion on this. Is it something that should be put right, while we're in the 2 year warranty period?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

In my opinion it's highly likely that a couple of pipes are possibly vibrating off each other or a floorboard and I would expect this to be covered under warranty.

Sounds like expansion. Normally get this when heating comes on or when hot water running waste pipes can also make expansion noise.

Is the knocking creaking sound only happening when the heating or hot water is on, if so it's where the pipes are expanding due to heat & they are either been drilled through a joist or are laying on top of a joist & the hole is not big enough for the pipes to run through & with the expansion it is making it creak against the timber.
