How to support existing rafters for new flat roof abutment
Anonymous user 06/03/2024 - 2.31 PM
We are planning an extension that will abut to our pitched roof. This will involve cutting back rafters and replacing the roof plate with an I-Beam. I would like to understand how this should be installed to continue to support existing rafters please. This illustration shows the possible options I envisage https://tinyurl.com/bddkcayw Exiting: Rafters on Plate Prop1: Rafter trimmed to birdsmouth and resting on top of I-Beam Prop2: Rafter trimmed to birdsmouth and resting on I-Beam flange Thanks in advance

Definitely prop 2 so ceilings are flush. You don’t want to have a step in the ceiling if you can avoid it.

The options show different ceiling heights.Without the relevant drawings can't possibly give an accurate answer.
Also the engineer will have to design the beam and attachments in order for them to be certified compliant and fit for purpose by the relevant building control certificate.
