Damp Proofing

Old 1820’s cottage with internal rising damp

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.08 PM

The outside of the cottage has had a damp proofing course, I have noticed every winter that I get round patches on the internal wall low to the ground around the internal chimney breast,, I have had a new roof, guttering and chimney breasts re pointed this year so its not from above, after researching I am pretty sure this is rising damp. When I had an extension a few years ago I saw a fraction of the foundations of my cottage, it was on pryamid of bricks stones and coins, very impressive actually, so obviously no modern foundations. Will a DPC on internal walls suffice or do I need works deeper? Any advice welcomed as a female alone I dont want to get ripped off. Thank you

No it’s not rising damp it’s hydroscopic Salts, coming from the chimney. It needs special treatment to prevent the salts coming back

Hack it back to the brick / stone , clean off the brick work / stone , apply a anti sulphate solution , replaster , I'd recommend a lime based replastering Regards Daniel Notts Renovations
