Plastering & Rendering

To skim or not to skim

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.08 PM

Hi, I are doing up an 1900 victorian house. I've stripped all the wallpaper off and the walls are back to grey, slightly pitted old plaster. I've read that to skim the walls runs the risk of the existing plaster blowing underneath? This is a house that has never had central heating. Could I use a special coating or paint instead of plastering? I have many walls that do need a full plaster but cost wise I need to keep this to a minimum. Plus I like the original feel of the house and don't want pin sharp plaster walls everywhere. I'd appreciate any advice. Thank you

The best solution is to remove all the plaster and install new plasterboard. If you don't want to ruin its current state. Use plaster mesh.

The only reason the plaster will blow is when the original plaster work is all ready blown If it hasn’t blown then a good coat of PVA or SBR would be fine for two coats of multi finish. If the walls are really bad with a Hollo sound and cracks the plaster will have to be removed back to brick then a dot and dab of plaster board 12.5mm will be required and then skimmed if your after a rustic look old English then you might need to find a bad plasterer because the only way i know of plastering is 100% flat and Polished I don’t believe there is any special paint to help you it definitely sounds like your going to need a plasterer to have a look at the Condition of the walls and see what he Recommends is best.

Do not remove old plaster and dot and dab walls just remove blown plaster and gyp bond walls not pva or spr and then skim where needed this will keep the cost down it sounds like a beautiful house try and keep it solid plaster not this orfull dot and dab I hope this is useful .
