the use of main ring Circuit passing and new ring circuit in same room?

Anonymous user 24/02/2024 - 2.30 PM

what if we keep part of main (whole house) ring circuit which is currently passing through the room for everything above worktops (consider clear labelling in CU): like microwave, hood, boiler, and 2/3 double sockets. this way the worse case scenario total load for dedicated kitchen ring circuit will be under 32A . If we consider 1,76kw multicooker (used often), 1.2kw blender and 1.1kw mixer (occasionally) on above worktop sockets this could help to balance the load but might be more confusing for testing and CU labelling or is it very bad practice in your opinion? diagram: https://drive.google.com/file/d/15Vo9glnB5yWxG3wXSZLWWmAPHebmP8Ot/view?usp=sharing

my main concern with this is safety and clear labelling, not when the system is in use - but when someone is asked to work on a socket in the area if the circuits are not identified correctly. That person if not qualified could switch of a circuit labelled kitchen sockets but be intending to work on a socket that is actually part of the main house ring main. Potentially very dangerous. Especially if the house is sold on and the next owner is not aware. The safest option would be to remove the old ring main from the kitchen area and connect every socket to a single circuit labelled 'kitchen sockets'. Anything else is potentially very dangerous. With regards to your edit about labelling. its fine now but in future it is still risky as labels can become illegible over time. I understand why you don't want to put all the kitchen items on the same circuit but it really is bad practice to do what you are describing... To be honest I would not quote for the work as I would not put my name to any certificate if this is done..

As long as your existing socket circuit is RCD protected and your load calcs are all correct, it’s perfectly fine 👍
