Water pouring from overflow pipe (normally 1st thing in morning)

Anonymous user 18/02/2024 - 2.30 PM

I have hot/warm water in my cold water tank in loft as well as a rippling from of of the 2 outlets. Only started since new bathroom fitted. New shower pump fitted under bath to increase pressure for shower only. Is this anything to do with it ? Have already replaced ball valve and water cylinder in airing cupboard and had thermostat checked. We have also checked expansion pipe in this is fine. In the airing cupboard there are a selection of pipes (2 with red valves) and various plumbers have told me that certain areas of these are hotter than they should be suggesting that this is where the hot water is mixing. British Gas have checked all that they class as central heating system and replaced parts as part of elimination process. They are telling me it is most likely to be a faulty shower valve, problem with pump or another mixer valve. Would any of this explain the problems I have described bearing in mind the actions already taken ?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

if your cold tank in loft is plastic ? and it is getting hot water into it it could collapse with disastrous results, get a qualified plumber to check it out for you, anyone can call themselves a plumber in this country, so check qualifications when you employ them.

Hi, It sounds like you have hot water boiling up from your hot water tank into your cold water tank through the expansion pipe which is the 22mm copper pipe which usually bends into the top of the Cold water tank. Usually caused by a faulty temperature control on the Immersion heater ( think of an electric kettle with a broken turn off switch - the Kettle just keeps on heating.) This can be very dangerous and it has been known to completely fill the cold tank which collapses under the heat and pours boiling water through the ceiling. Sadly, this happened in Wiltshire some years ago where the water poured into a child’s bed with fatal results. Make sure your immersion heater is turned off and call a plumber - now. Guy

I suspect that the pump has been fitted without a suitable flange fitted to the cylinder and instead plumbed directly in to the hot water draw off/vent pipe..the hot water that is entering your cold water tank is the pumped water overrunning up the vent pipe and filling it up to overflowing..fitting a pump without a flange is not ideal but it can be done in some circumstances and to stop the water shooting up your vent pipe you can try extending the height of the vent pipe above the cold water tank so that the pumped water only comes out of the taps or shower when you use either..water will take the route of least resistance so by doing this you create greater resistance in the vent pipe.
