Skim coat over woodchip ceiling

Anonymous user 17/03/2024 - 2.31 PM

Is it feasible/safe for a professional plasterer to apply a skim coat directly to a celling which is covered with painted woodchip wallpaper? I have a bedroom in my new house 3.5 x 3.5m and I'm scared of what I'll find if I start ripping it down. I would welcome any advice. Many Thanks

Plastering over wallpaper is generally not recommended due to several potential issues that may arise, compromising the quality and longevity of the finish. My advice is to remove the wallpaper completely before applying plaster. This ensures a clean, even surface for the plaster to adhere to.

Either strip paper or overboard it if you have the height but don’t skim on paper it’s a no no

We would not recommend plastering over woodchip as it will most likely pill off at some point however sometime it is made so well that if you use good bonding agent such us blue grit (not pva) it may work. To make it easier we would recomend overboarding ceilings with 9.5mm plasterboards, tape joints and then skim over.

It would not be recommended to plaster straight on to wood chip, it would need to be over board with 12.5 mm standard Board and then plastered over to create a professional finish

Remove the wood chip, apply blue grit onto the ceiling and then apply plaster. Or you can cover it with new plasterboard and have a smooth surface to plaster onto

Hi I wouldn’t dream of plastering straight on to woodchip or any paper what so ever. The only way is hard work remove in the paper or to over board the ceiling with plaster board 12.5mm is my chosen choice of thickness of board as this will help level the surface ready for skimming.

You would have have two options here; 1) if the wood chip wallpaper is easily removable It would need removing before plastering as you can not plaster onto any type of wallpaper as the wallpaper will likely come away from the wall/ceiling with the weight of the plaster. Once the wallpaper has been completely removed the ceiling will need to be bonded with either pva/SBR or blue grit depending on the surface and the suction underneath. 2) Your second option would be to get your ceiling overboard with 12.5mm plasterboards if the wallpaper is not easily removable which I would recommend. Then it would be straight forward to plaster your ceiling as it would just need skimming and scrimming. I hope this answer helps you out.
