Air vents for blocked off fireplace

Hi Re:detached property I am thinking of getting rid of my existing gas fire place. It’s not blocked off from the top and pretty confident no water is getting in. So my understanding is I need to ventilate top and bottom. Can I install the air vent on the outside wall rather than inside the house?

Yes but it’s free house ventilation if you put the vent in the house , it also works better because of thermal forces .
