Damp Proofing

Best way to damp proof single skin brick garage and prevent brick dust

Anonymous user 17 March 2024 - 2.31 PM

Hi - I have a detached single skin brick garage which I want to use for storage. However there are two problems 1) corners of the garage have damp patches and 2) there is a lot of brick dust. What would be the most effective way to damp proof the garage and separately seal up the bricks to prevent dust?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Firstly I would be checking the pointing on the outside of the garage to make sure they are no gaps where water ingress gang get in to cause the damp. If there are no gaps on the outside I think the most efficient way to deal with this would be to put a sand and cement render to the inside of the garage wall with a waterproofer in the sand and cement to prevent any damp,at the same time keep the render 100ml from the floor as when it touches the floor it can create rising damp from the cold of the floor. Another way is to drill and inject a damp corse then lat and board the walls using treated lats and foil backed plasterboard.

Rendering the inside is a good option to kill two birds with one stone provided the outside is in good condition.

Hi Firstly ..identify what is coursing the damp ...rising or penetrating. If its rising ...it will require injecting Penetrating ..seal the out side with a product called storm dry ...probably.best to do both processes. Regards to inside ....baton out the walls and use moisture resistant plasterboard....for a garage I'd go with tapered joints ...so save on getting it all plastered. Hope that helps

Check all pointing on brickwork is good and no leaks coming from the roof ,put a coat of dryzone storm dry masonry protection cream on brickwork,as for the inside use floorseal interior brick dust sealer or paint with a masonry paint
