Is it safe to make a much larger opening in chimney breast to free up space
Anonymous user 17/03/2024 - 2.31 PM
I have a huge chimney breast in my ground-floor kitchen. The room is tiny and I would like to be able to fit a small breakfast table in. This will only be possible if I open up the fireplace up by raising the lintel from the floor by approximately 1.8 meters and widening the opening. Once finished the sides of the chimney breast will remain with a much higher lintel bearing a much wider opening. I will want to close the chimney off at this point, is it safe to do this?

If the new lintel is directly above the existing one there shouldn’t be a problem. Obviously use acrow props and strong boys, and I would have a bit of a dig to check footings etc.
