Why does one electrical socket affect the other?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.36 PM

Hi All, don't know if this is the right place for this but... DIYer here. I changed the faceplate on a double socket a few days ago and all seemed well. I plugged in our electric blanket and fairy lights into it and everything was okay. Last night, after having the electric blanket on and the fairy lights off, I turned off the blanket and the fairy lights came on for a split second, despite the socket it is plugged into being off. I have not tried this with other appliances as I'm not particularly keen on causing any damage to the appliances. I have since unplugged the lights. Any ideas as to the cause? Cheers in advance.😄

It could be a faulty socket / dodgy switch. Best to get it checked out by an electrician.

Pay for a fully qualified electrician and get the Minor Works Certificate as well, don’t buy cheap products.

I would make sure polarity is correct on the socket you have changed and it would be a good idea to use a double pole socket instead of single pole one.

The socket sounds as though it a single pole switch get a double pole switched socket so both the live and neutral are switched they are a bit dearer but worth it.
