Installing electrics into a garage (not attached to the house)
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.47 PM
Hello - we have a separate garage with shared access to garages for 3 other properties. Our garage is the first (nearest to our property). My question is, do we need permission from the Council to run cable from our house to the garage (it will be armoured and underground, and done by a professional)? Many thanks

Hi if the route you plan to run the cable is classed as public right of way then yes. I would double check the boundary plans for your property as well. But I would always recommend confirming in writing with the council.

Yes, if it is not your land they will get highways involved and they will dedicate their own contractor to bury the cable for you will cost a small fortune. Good luck.

If your property runs upto the garages and is not used as a pubic footpath you should be ok. As long as its buried and armoured cable if not it needs to be in copex or ducting.

Having shared garage means or looks you’re not the free holder but just lees holder.
In this case you definitely need to notify the
- Building/property managing company who are a third party looking after everything in the communal are on behalf of the free holders.
- Also the other garage share holders need to agree on this,
- The free holder if no third party management are involved,
- council if non of the above are applicable and you are coming out of the main property boundary to the part which no longer is part of this property by any means.
