Is it normal to feel air from under the window
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.08 PM
Our windows are newly installed in Aug 2022. Good quality etc. But is it normal to feel air under the window (where the window sits near trim). Our house is detached. It's more apparent the colder it is, presumably this is due to outside temperature and colder surface. There are no gaps or cracks. I've re- caulked for peace of mind but still feel it coming up. .
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Seal failure can cause additional problems in the window including window fogging, moisture leaks, window rot in wooden frames, and more. If you feel a draft or air leak around your window and you haven't noticed these other problems it's a good idea to get it checked out.

This isn't normal at all. The window is supposed to there to keep the drafts out. Unless you want air coming in that is. Then you would open the window or the trickle vent.
I would inform the person who fitted the window and ask them back to take a look. If the window is only a year old I wouldn't imagine the seals could be failing. The draft has to be coming from around the window somehow. If it is the seals, then the window hasn't been fitted correctly.

Hi there to give you an answer to your question about the NEW WINDOWS that you have had installed at your property. You have stated that you can feel a draft coming from under the newly installed window. This is not correct and the window should seal 100% all around the external window frame and with every casement that opens within the window. You should be able to go back to the supplier and explain this issue that you have noticed with your new window and give them the opportunity to resolve this problem with your newly installed window at your property.
I hope that this answer helps you to resolve your issue with your window.
Cheers, Darren.

If you have a draught coming from the window it is usually the hinges need replacing, if you look the opposite side to the handle and check the corners for a small gap that would be your problem. If the hinges are fine I would presume the window is too small for the gap and after installation they may have covered the gap with trim so it cannot be seen and sealed it and if the seal starts to fail in any place a draught will come through.
