Wind noise coming in from the outside of bay window
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.54 PM
Hi, wondering if I can get the opinion of other tradespeople here. I'm a plumber, so this isn't my area of expertise. We've bought a new build home and we have a bay window in the lounge. We are getting high pitched wind noise coming in from above the upvc window frame. It's a shame I can't add pictures. But to build a picture, it's a walk in bay window, so brick on the bottom half from the floor upto the upvc window. Then externally it's a pitched tile roof with fascias and soffit. Internally it has about 300mm vertical plasterboard above the frame before it joins the ceiling. It's where the plasterboard joins the upvc frame that we are getting this wind. Externally it looks sound, so no gaps around fascias or soffit, everywhere sealed. Felt under tiles, lipping into guttering. Its like the wind is getting under the tiles and then being forced down internally to the frame. I've had the fascia off and also nothing obvious. A few 3x2 batons and insulation, no obvious gaps. No vents in soffit, but footprint of the bay is 2m² max. Any ideas as it sounds like a trumpet at night when the wind is blowing on that gable end? Thanks in advance Rich EDIT: (Just realised I can do this!) I've had the builders out today and they've removed the plasterboard on the inside above the window going up to the ceiling. This exposed a wooden joist. Basically the frame of the pitched roof, that's sat on the window frame. Looked about 6x2. And it looks like to get the frame for the small pitched roof level, they have used packers at 1 end. This meant there was a gap of about 5mm going to about 1mm from left to right. This is where the wind was coming from as you could feel the draught. Its directly level with the soffit. They've sealed it from the inside. But I've a good mind remove all the fascia and also seal any gaps externally. What's your thoughts? Hope that makes sense! Rich
