Carport distance between neighbouroung house?
Anonymous user 18/02/2024 - 2.30 PM
I have a bungalow and I want to put a car port down the side of the house, within our boundary line. The only thing that concerns me is the detatched bungalow next to us has 2 windows on that side of their property. For this reason, will we need planning permission, or is there a required distance needed?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi I'm assuming you will also need access to your car port so I'm going to answer this as best as I can in 2 sections, hopefully covering your question.
Driveway leading to car port - 1. Unless you are drastically changing levels & surface water, generally you do not need planning permission for a driveway. However you will need to consider access to your new proposed driveway such as a dropped kerb. However it is always best to check with your local building authority before starting work.
2. Car port structure. To avoid planning permission I believe your structure must be at least 2 metres away from the boundary and no more than 4 metres high (2.5 metres high within 2 metres of a boundary) and the car port must not cover more than half of the property. I don't believe windows facing it should be a problem as semi detached properties often share a 'middle driveway'.
I apologise if any of this is wrong, however I have checked this information across two sources. It is always best to check with local building & planning if you're unsure. Also check the party wall agreement and possibly consult with your neighbour.

Use narrow stations and aclear roof then you won't take the light away from your neighbours window just make sure your roof passes the border line cheers
