Damp Proofing

Is my floor ready to be relaid with Karndean again

Anonymous user 18/02/2024 - 2.30 PM

We had mositure coming from the floor and seeping through the Karndean flooring last year. Karndean and the hardboard under and around the area had to be removed. We initially used a dehumidifier and then left it exposed to dry out. I have had two leak detection companies come in and they gave totally different opinions which is very confusing. The cause of this moisture has never been found. Near where the moisture was detected, we did have a small leak from the shower pipes in the bathroom which made the wall in the Hallway and the skirting board quite damp. This leak has been sorted. One of the suggestions is that the moisture retained in the wall travelled about 2 feet away and showed up in the floor. I took a moisture reading today. In the area on the floor boards where the moisture was most intense shows a reading around 16% and the reading about a foot is 12%. Do you feel I can relay the Karndean now or is there some actions I have to take prior to relaying the flooring?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

A reading of 14 in timber indicates saturation, a reading below 23 in masonry, indicates dry though about 8-10 is ideal .

Before you lay the floor use some acrylic primer from Mapei 2-3 times that is used to lay isolate the surfaces before tiling and lieve it to dry . After that you can lay the floor without any problems.

I've never seen Karndean or Amtico flooring laid on hardboard. Maybe I am missing something. As a general builder I have had professional, third party approved installers lay these products and they are always hot on moisture levels. The prep work is so vital and often takes longer than laying the finished surface. You need the damp issues addressed first. Don't rush things........
