What's the best way to remove cracked artexing throughout my house?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 2.54 PM

Hi All I have some extensive cracking on most of my ceilings. The artexing has cracked in some cases right across the room. A surveyor has said that this is due to the age of the house (1960's) and due to the plaster boards moving away from each other. I was thinking of getting all the ceiling re-plastered and coving removed anyway because I hate coving and artex, but I am not sure what is the best way to approach. Do the whole ceilings need taking off or just the artexing plastering over? I have 2 living rooms, dinning room, large kitchen, 3 bedrooms, large entrance hall, in the main house and I am concerned its going to cost a fortune if it all starts coming off.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

hi there I would only skim over these ceilings if they where sound not moving to be safe we usually find the joist centres string a line across to know you have the centres of the joists and board over screwing the boards to the ceiling trying not to put a join on a crack but covering it then skimming over more expense but a more solid job with out taking the ceilings down if you do go down the road of only skimming over make sure the plasterer puts fibre scrim over every crack and use a good quality adhesive regards Joseph

Hi there no you do not need to take down the boards as well if not to bad just scrape the artex flat with a ceiling scraper ready to be skimmed.
