Help please :(... Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 showing through emulsion.

Anonymous user 17/03/2024 - 2.30 PM

Hi all, please can someone offer me some advice. I've had a media wall installed in the living room and whilst waiting for the plaster to dry, I decided I'd prep all other walls... I applied Zinsser Bulls Eye1-2-3 to the window ledge, skirting and a few patches where there were some marks on the walls. After glossing the woodwork, I then painted all the walls with two coats of Leyland white emulsion to give me a clean workspace. I'm now painting the walls with final colour - Crown Easyclean Matt Emulsion - and the Zinsser 1-2-3 is showing through. I've only done one coat so far but there's already two coats of Leylan White under the Crown and on top of the Zinsser so I'm really kicking myself. What can I do to cover the patches? Thanks very much in advance. *** Update - thanks for the responses. I switched to Johnstone's Covaplus and that did the trick. Surprisingly cheaper than the 'cheap' (never buying again) Crown paint, but really happy with both the colour and the finish. Great paint, solved my issue. ***

Two things will work it may take 3 coats over patches coming through or recover patches with an oil base undercoat then repaint. Both will work depending on how much is coming through with seeing be difficult to know which.

I would suggest sanding the areas back and starting again. I’ve used zinsser many times and always does a great job. It’s probably more down to texture, if you applied it with a brush rather than a roller, this could be the reason. Zinsser has a slight sheen that will show through matt paint if not evenly applied.

Most 'old school' decorators would not use a dedicated stain block and would simply apply a good coat of oil based paint, e.g. undercoat or gloss. Does the job every time as the oil based barrier prevents the water based contaminated paint bleeding through.
