Internal wall repair after a lot of water penetration

Anonymous user 17/03/2024 - 2.30 PM

We’d really appreciate your expert advice. We have had severe water penetration come through and the problem appears to be fixed. It’s been two months since the works were done to the external walls and parts of the wall are still damp not to the touch but when a meter reading has been done. The water penetration appeared to be from porous bricks and pointing on the exterior wall and chimney. The water damage had been occurring for several years. Does this wall need to be stripped to brick work, treated and let dry and then re-plastered? Or left to dry for a longer period and repaired? Or do you have other suggestions? In order to find out what exactly needs doing who is best to call for a quote would it be a plasterer or a builder? Many thanks, Kim and Mark

Hi if the problem as been treated which was causing the problem in the first place yet there is still damp on the wall I would remove the damp patches treat the wall on the inside if needed Bond the patched areas and then skim when dry

I would strip back to brick then seal with a damp proof sealant then replaster or dot and dab a plasterboard

Sort out the source of the water first. If it's repointing, do this in lime. It depends if you're plaster is lime or gypsum. If it's gypsum, then I would suggest removing it and replacing it with lime. The lime will enable the movement of water vapour and dry the wall out.
